Tracks like “I Bet My Life”, “Summer”, and “Insert Actual Song Title Here” are similar to the style of Night Visions, while “Gold”, “I’m So Sorry”, and “Friction” have a darker alternative grit. With this release, Imagine Dragons has equated themselves to established Vegas alternative groups like The Killers and Panic! At the Disco.

It’s a little more gritty than its predecessor, though it fluctuates between the typically positive and upbeat sounds the band is known for and a harder, Las Vegas style rock. Smoke + Mirrors takes more of a risk in the alternative direction. Smoke + Mirrors is their second album released through KIDinaKorner/Interscope records, and while Night Visions gave the band a great debut that they would be able to ride the popularity of for a while, Smoke + Mirrors proves the diversity of the group with a new, raw, and soulful sound. But even this fails to properly convey any sort of sincerity, and when coupled with lackluster production, Smoke and Mirrors is a lot of smoke without any fire. After a long tour and three years without new material, it’s highly impressive that Imagine Dragons can come back and capture our attention so quickly. Reynolds’ vocals are pretty good, and songs such as “Polaroid” excel with its stripped-back production and nursery-rhyme style. “Gold,” despite its ‘Black Skinhead’-esque intro, is one of the most annoying and disjointed songs you’ll ever hear.

Last month, the Las Vegas quartet performed the song on The American Music Awards and took home the award for 'Favorite Artist - Alternative Rock' for the second year in a row. The album features the new hit single 'I Bet My Life' - currently in the Top 5 at Modern Rock radio. Yet it doesn’t get any better “I’m So Sorry” is a blatant rip-off of The Black Keys “I Bet My Life” is a generic, overarching, swooping indie-anthem-a well-trodden path. Multi-platinum, Grammy Award-winning rock band Imagine Dragons will release their new album, entitled Smoke + Mirrors, on February 17th, 2015, via KIDinaKORNER/Interscope Records. It ends up being monotonous, uninspiring, and it would be nice if in fact the band didn’t ‘come back’ with more surface-level rubbish in the next song, “Smoke & Mirrors.” He then repeats “It comes back to you” numerous times as if to reiterate the point. On “It Comes Back To Me,” Reynolds claims that it’s “all the things that worry are all the things you don’t believe,” without actually digging any deeper than proclaiming this. It’s an airy, falsetto-abound sound however, that same airiness lacks a proper grounding and sincerity in the lyricism to support the emotional statements. With “Shots,” the album begins with an upbeat, galloping drumbeat supported sound and showcases Reynolds’ surprisingly strong vocals. Smoke & Mirrors isn’t necessarily a step forward it’s more of the same, but less. Album: Smoke + Mirrors (Super Deluxe Edition) Artist: Imagine Dragons. Whilst their debut, Night Visions (2012) was, albeit a bit of a mess, it was an exciting mess with huge, soaring choruses and energy to match during live performances. “I’m sorry for everything I’ve done,” confesses Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds on the opening song of the band’s second album, Smoke and Mirrors-something he should absolutely feel the need to apologize for.
